Spirit of America Staff

Dr. George E. Naff, former conductor of the Duke University Wind Symphony, serves as the Director of Operations and Music Coordinator of the 2004 Spirit of America.

In addition to his work with Spirit of America, Dr. Naff is a consultant with Destination Europe in Luxembourg, and serves as the American coordinator and audition chairperson for the International Festival de Musique held each summer in Luxembourg.

Dr. Naff serves as a guest conductor for honor bands, as an adjudicator for approximately 300 band, orchestral, and choral performances each year, and as a clinician and judge for North American Music Festivals in the United States and Canada each spring. In addition to his work as a band director, Dr. Naff is a National Certified Counselor and serves as an associate minister at Boone United Methodist Church.

Dr. Naff is a former member of the US Air Force Band; holds degrees from East Tennessee State University, the University of South Carolina, Appalachian State University, and the Graduate Theological Foundation; and is a former director of the Symphonic, Marching and Stage Bands at East Carolina University and East Tennessee State University.

Sue Naff is the Administrative Director of the 2004 Spirit of America National Honor Band. Sue provides the "personal touch" for Spirit members long before the tour begins. She is the author of the newsletters which are sent to each Spirit member to help prepare them every step of the way for their "Spirit Experience."

Sue is a graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. She was a snare drummer and percussion section leader in the ASU Marching Mountaineer Band as well as a percussionist in many other university ensembles. In 1992 she was appointed to the ASU Alumni Council for three years. In 1995 Sue was inducted as an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi National College Band Fraternity. She was co-chairperson for the university's Centennial Homecoming in 1999 for which she was recognized and honored by ASU Athletics. Sue was recently appointed to the ASU Chancellor's Football Opportunities Study Committee which is working to advance Appalachian athletics and the football program.

J. Edward Shealy, Associate Director and Visual Coordinator for the 2004 Spirit of America, is Director of Bands at West Ashley High School in Charleston, SC. He has a BA degree in Music Education from Newberry College and is a member of Phi Beta Mu National Honorary Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Professional Music Fraternity, National Band Association, American School Band Directors Association, South Carolina Band Directors Association and the Music Educators National Conference. Mr. Shealy was awarded the NBA Citation of Excellence Award in 1997.

Mr. Shealy's bands have performed in the Orange Bowl Parade in Miami, Florida, the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, been named SC Lower State Marching Champions four times and have received the Outstanding Performance Award for the past 17 years. This is the highest award the SC Band Director's Association gives. This past spring the West Ashley HS Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Bands received straight Superior ratings at the SC State Concert Band Festival. They have been invited to perform in February 2004 for the SCMEA In-Service Conference.

This is Mr. Shealy's twenty-first year with Spirit of America.

Michael Mann, Minister of Instrumental Music at Two Rivers Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, is the percussion coordinator for the 2004 Spirit of America. Mr. Mann is former Director of the Marching Band at the University of Miami, and Associate Director of Bands at the Unitersity of Southwest Louisiana and East Tennessee State University. He is active as an adjudicator for Drum Corps International and as a clinician for Pearl Drum Co., Sabian Cymbal Co., and Innovative Percussion. As a performer, Mr. Mann was a percussionist in the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and is a free-lance percussionist in the Nashville area.

He received his BS Degree in Music Education at Middle Tennessee State University and a MM Degree in Percussion Performance at the University of Miami. Mr. Mann is a former percussion instructor for the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps of Rockford, Illinois.

Most recently, Mr. Mann was elected to the Board of Performance Groups International, serving as a consultant to Worldwide Tours for high school and college bands.

This is Mr. Mann's eighteenth year with the Spirit of America staff.

Donald Peach, former Director of Bands at Hickory and Lincolnton High Schools in North Carolina, serves as Director of Personnel and Associate Director of Music for the 2004 Spirit of America. Mr. Peach is a graduate of Mars Hill College, a past president of the Northwestern Band Directors Association, and a member of the North Carolina Band Directors Association, the American School Band Directors Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Professional Music Fraternity.

In addition to developing consistently superior bands, Mr. Peach has served on the staff of the largest summer music camp in the southeast, and as the Curriculum Section Chair on the task force which revised the instrumental music curriculum for the state of North Carolina. He is in constant demand as an adjudicator, clinician, guest conductor, and workshop director in the Southeastern United States. Mr. Peach is presently retired from public school teaching and is one of the Educational Consultants for Brook-Mays Music Company. This is Mr. Peach's third year with the Spirit of America staff.
